DVBIA Map 200If you are located within the Dunbar Village business improvement area, then you are a member of the DVBA! However, if you’d like to vote at our AGM, market your business through our marketing initiative, or just know what’s going on in the neighbourhood, you will need to renew your membership information yearly.

Every year, we focus our efforts by creating a Strategic Plan that acts as a checklist for the year ahead. For the latest 2013-2014 plan, click here. Planning happens in April of every year, so if you have ideas that you think should be a priority, contact us before then.

What is a BIA?

A Business Improvement Area is a self-funded business district managed and promoted by a non-profit society. The funding is raised through a special levy agreed to by the commercial property owners and business tenants within a geographically defined business district and collected by the City of Vancouver. All commercial property and business owners within the geographically defined boundaries are members of the BIA and pay the BIA levy.

The BIA levy is proportionate to the commercial property owner’s share of the total taxable value within the BIA boundaries.

The area is managed by a non-profit society whose Board of Directors is comprised of duly elected commercial property and business owners from within the BIA. Its purpose is to improve the economic vitality of the business area.

The BIA plays an important role in business promotion, safety and security, public realm enhancement and advocacy on behalf of the membership. It promotes the area as a complete experience rather than as individual businesses. BIAs have expanded their programs to include social issues and community work programs, as well as being involved in community planning and business recruitment. BIAs respond to and reflect the individual needs of their area; they can be initiators of revitalization projects, coordinators of civic planning processes, addressors of street issues and an important element of district economic development.
Dunbar Village BIA

Dunbar is very much a neighbourhood and Dunbar business is an inextricable part of this community.

The DVBA serves approximately 300 members within three commercial areas in Dunbar:

North Dunbar between W16th and W19th Avenues
Central Dunbar between West King Edward and W30th Avenues
Dunbar South between W38th and W41st Avenues and east along West 41st to Collingwood St.

It was formed in 2008 to provide our community with a pleasant, vibrant shopping street through the products and services we offer, the manner in which we help maintain the appearance of the street, and the community events to which we can contribute. We do this through streetscape improvements, marketing events & promotional opportunities, and through community building both within our ranks of businesses and within the community at large.
